ASA 103 — Basic Coastal Cruising (American Sailing)
The ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising standard (American Sailing) prepares sailors to skipper a sloop‑rigged, auxiliary‑powered keelboat (~25–35 ft) by day in moderate coastal conditions. It covers cruising terminology, boat systems, engine operation, docking, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules and basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather interpretation, safety and seamanship. Certification requires demonstration of written and on‑water skills against the ASA 103 standards.
About this course
ASA 103, Basic Coastal Cruising, is an intermediate certification standard owned and published by American Sailing (formerly the American Sailing Association). The standard builds on Basic Keelboat skills and teaches the cruising fundamentals needed to skipper larger boats on coastal and inland waters: cruise preparation and planning, terminology, safety equipment and procedures, boat systems and auxiliary engine operation, docking and anchoring, sail combinations and reefing, basic coastal navigation and chart work, applicable Navigation Rules, crew management and seamanship, and weather interpretation. Completion requires demonstration of the course's published skills on the water and passing the ASA written exam for 103; schools teach to the ASA 103 certification standards and award the ASA 103 certificate on successful assessment.
What you learn
- Skipper a sloop‑rigged, auxiliary‑powered keelboat of approximately 25–35 ft by day in moderate winds and sea conditions.
- Identify and explain cruising sailboat terminology (turnbuckle, chainplate, binnacle, companionway, ground tackle, windlass, etc.).
- List federally required and ASA‑recommended safety equipment for recreational vessels of the type.
- Operate and describe basic boat systems and auxiliary engine operation, including safe refuelling procedures.
- Demonstrate docking and mooring procedures using lines and fenders to control and secure the vessel.
- Plan a simple coastal cruise and use basic coastal navigation tools: charts, symbols, latitude/longitude, aids to navigation, measuring distance and determining magnetic direction.
- Apply basic Navigation Rules for collision avoidance, safe speed, and actions in restricted visibility for a recreational vessel.
- Perform anchoring procedures, reefing, heaving‑to, crew overboard awareness and other seamanship tasks.
- Interpret weather information relevant to coastal cruising and describe how it affects cruising decisions.
