Club Marine started life in Melbourne in 1959 as Marine Hull & Liability, set up by insurance broker Fred Wilson to support the city's fledgling boat dealers, back when most pleasure boats were timber dinghies and launches. It became Marine Hull Club in the late 1970s and Club Marine in 1986 as it spread around the country. Mercantile Mutual took it over in the early 1990s, and Allianz bought it in 2003. Its bimonthly Club Marine magazine turned 40 in 2025 and has a print run of more than 70,000.
Against the other big specialists, Club Marine's strengths are breadth (from jet skis to houseboats), the $10,000 emergency benefit and personal effects cover. For a yacht-only policy with agreed value built in, also quote Pantaenius. For a brand-new dealer boat, Nautilus gives two years of agreed value automatically. If you'd like to choose your underwriter, try New Wave.
Club Marine has offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Coomera, Adelaide and here at Unit 9, 24 Mews Road, Fremantle WA 6160, by the Fishing Boat Harbour. Visits are by appointment. For quotes, renewals and claims, call 1300 00 CLUB (2582).

“DO NOT INSURE WITH THEM! My partner and I have had insurance with club marine for the past 5 years. The first claim my partner made on his boat they are telling us he is not covered when the motor was damaged in the water by a floating rock. Excess was paid straight away and it look 2.5 months for them to tell us the claim is denied with no reason. Noone has called with a update through the whole process. Don't bother wasting your money with them”

“Easy to deal with and piece of mind. Wouldn’t use any other craft insurer”

“We have used Club Marine insurance for various boats over the past 30 years, and have never had any claims. The ideal clients you would think! Having recently purchased a custom sailing dinghy from an amateur builder we attempted to insure the boat with Club Marine to transport it back home. Firstly we were unable to use online services as there was not an “identifiable” manufacturer. So we phoned, and after a long wait, spoke to someone who seemed to be from an offshore call centre. Although polite, she could not understand our description of the boat and the fact that it was not manufactured by a commercial company. She therefore declined to insure the boat, but did advise that we could contact the insurance council if we had further concerns. We didn’t do this, but instead contacted another insurer who was happy to assist. We won’t be troubling Club Marine for any further business”
Hi Alison, I'm sorry we couldn't offer insurance for your non-stock production boat. There are many factors that can determine the risk based on our acceptance criteria. We review this regularly to make sure we are providing cover in a sustainable way. Please also be assured all of our staff in the call centre are based in Australia. If you would like to discuss this further, please call us on 1300 00 2582. Thanks Cassie
“Ive been insured with CM for about 14 years with various boats, recently i lost my vessel due to a design flaw in the pod. Club Marine dealt with a very stressful situation in a very swift, professional manner, getting an assessor who really knew his stuff, and a salvage team to the boat on the same day. The claim, despite being complex due to mitigating factors was sorted within about 10 days. This was an exceptional effort and highly professional and i want to thank again the CM team for such an exemplary effort”
“Hi Dave, we’re delighted to hear about your recent positive experience with us. Your satisfaction is our top priority, and we’re glad we could meet your expectations. We wish you happy and safe boating. Thanks Mark”
“Great insurance company until you need to make a claim. Then they look for every possible way to reject the claim even after a very experienced and highly respected boat mechanic has explained the damage to them.”
Hi Mike, I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with your claim. If you email me your details including phone number so I can arrange a call. The best email address to use is claims@clubmarine.com.au Thanks Mark
Dangar Island sits in the lower Hawkesbury River close to Brooklyn and is one of Sydney’s small, boat‑access communities. From the water it reads as a wooded, low island with sandy foreshore, a public jetty and private moorings; its position at the mouth of Cowan Creek and close to the main river channel makes it an attractive short‑cruise destination for trailer sailors, runabouts and small cruisers but also one that requires careful local knowledge and respect for resident berths, ferry operations and tidal currents.
Look for a friendly club with beginner-focused training, accessible facilities and boats, a supportive community, clear safety practices, and opportunities to progress at your own pace.
