Set on sheltered Round Hill Creek in the historic Town of 1770, 1770 Marina is a friendly coastal base for local boaters, cruising yachts and fishing crews bound for the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Its intimate scale and easy holiday atmosphere make arrival feel personal, while the waterfront setting keeps crews close to the natural beauty that defines Agnes Water and Seventeen Seventy.
The marina is particularly well placed for adventures toward Lady Musgrave Island, Fitzroy Reef and the Bunker Group. Whether stopping overnight, preparing for a reef run or settling in for a longer stay, visitors can combine practical boat services with café dining, creek views and the unhurried rhythm of one of Queensland’s most appealing seaside communities.
Floating berths accommodate short visits, overnight stays and longer arrangements, with shore power and potable water available at the dock. Restrooms, convenient parking and straightforward shore access help make daily life aboard comfortable, while the dedicated fuel dock supports early departures and reef-bound itineraries. After-hours refuelling can be arranged through the marina office.
The waterfront café is a natural meeting place for breakfast or lunch overlooking the pontoons, and the surrounding precinct offers local shops and paddlecraft hire for exploring the protected creek. A dual-lane public ramp sits beside the marina for trailer boats. For major haul-outs and specialised refit work, Bundaberg and Gladstone provide the nearest larger marine-service centres, while Agnes Water supplies supermarkets, hardware and everyday provisioning.
Round Hill Creek is a beautiful but tidal entrance, and visiting skippers benefit from planning their arrival in good visibility during the upper half of the tide. Once inside, the marina provides a comfortable alternative to the township anchorage and a convenient place to prepare the boat before heading offshore.
Lady Musgrave Island and its renowned lagoon lie roughly 30 nautical miles away, opening the door to snorkelling, fishing and reef cruising in settled conditions. Ashore, visitors can enjoy the foreshore boardwalk, the Captain Cook monument, LARC amphibious tours and the cafés and beaches of Agnes Water. Whale sightings add another highlight during the migration season, while school holidays and local festival periods bring an especially lively waterfront atmosphere.

American River (Kangaroo Island, SA) is a small, sheltered inlet and township on the north‑eastern side of Kangaroo Island that acts as a calm staging point for cruising the eastern part of the island and for short hops through Backstairs Passage. It’s distinctive for its protected anchorage inside Eastern Cove and the adjacency of Pelican Lagoon — a shallow, ecologically important lagoon with sanctuary zoning — which shapes how and where boats can move. The area suits sheltered day sailing, weekend cruising and short coastal passages; it’s appropriate for trailer sailors, small cruisers and a
A regular, layered maintenance routine combining hull cleaning, targeted anti-fouling management, cathodic protection and systems checks will substantially reduce marine growth and corrosion for boats kept year‑round in South Australian waters. Focus on preventing attachment and electrochemical attack, then inspect and act more often if you’re in warm, nutrient-rich or high‑traffic sheltered waters.
Explore →Plan as a chain of conservative daily legs tied to your boat’s real-world fuel and speed in the expected sea state, with confirmed primary and alternate anchorages/berths, fuel legs and back-up fuel options, and a documented emergency/diversion plan (comms, tow and med-evac). Build tidal and weather gates into each leg and carry chart and comms redundancy.
Explore →Plan passages across Spencer Gulf or to Kangaroo Island by basing fuel on your boat’s actual consumption plus a generous reserve, choosing sensible staging/stop options that match your boat and crew, and prioritising shelter and weather windows (gale fronts, strong winds and tidal streams can make the gulf uncomfortable or unsafe). Confirm fuel availability, safe anchorages or marinas on your route, and check up-to-date local weather, tide and navigation information before you go.
Explore →Do a seasonal inspection and servicing routine that focuses on hull and antifouling, through-hulls and seacocks, rigging and sails, engine and fuel systems, electricals and batteries, safety gear and bilge systems. Tailor exact tasks to your boat type, age and where you sail in South Australia, and follow manufacturer and marine service advice for anything technical.
