Training
Find the right courses and instructors to get confident handling boats, managing emergencies and meeting safety obligations in Australian waters. Compare 3 reviewed businesses, local coverage and customer feedback.
Skipper and safety training covers the practical skills and knowledge you need to run a boat confidently and keep people safe at sea. Courses range from short radio and first-aid sessions to multi-day skipper development and sea-survival training. Some are shore-based theory, others are hands-on on the water — many combine both. Training is tailored to different boats and activities: trailer-sailers, keelboats, catamarans, powerboats, coastal passages and offshore voyaging all have different demands. You’ll typically turn to a skipper or safety trainer when you want to: take charge of a boat for the first time; upgrade from day-sailing to overnight or offshore passages; refresh emergency skills after a long break; meet a club, charter or employer requirement; or respond to changing equipment and technology. A good training provider will match the course content and vessel type to your experience level, and explain what is required to reach a stated outcome. Expect clear learning outcomes, a mix of theory and practical drills, and realistic emergency practice. Practical sessions usually include man-overboard recovery, safe use of lifejackets and life rafts, emergency communications and basic damage control. Shore sessions cover navigation, weather interpretation, passage planning and maritime safety regulations as they apply to safe decision-making. Before you book, check what the course actually delivers, the type of boat used, group size, and any prerequisites so you arrive prepared and get the most from the training.
