Definition
When a body's centre is on the celestial horizon, its bearing north or south of due east or west can be computed from the relation that the sine of the amplitude equals the sine of the declination divided by the cosine of the latitude. The observed compass bearing at that moment, compared with the true value, yields total compass error. In practice the sun's lower limb is observed sitting about half a diameter above the visible horizon.
