Definition
The curve assumed by a suspended cable under its own weight. Catenary keeps the pull at the anchor shank close to horizontal, which is what allows most anchor designs to develop full holding power, and it absorbs surge as the bow rises. Catenary is progressively lost as wind load increases; above roughly force 7 the chain may straighten, so a nylon snubber or extra scope becomes essential.
