Definition
Any range measurement, whether by radar, vertical sextant angle, rising or dipping light, or a distance-measuring beacon, constrains the vessel to a circle centred on the object. Two such circles intersect at two points, one of which is usually rejected by an approximate bearing or by dead reckoning. Circles of position combine well with straight bearing lines and are the underlying geometry of satellite ranging, where the loci become spheres.
