Mandated by SOLAS Chapter V for vessels of 300 gross tonnage and upwards on international voyages, all cargo vessels of 500 gross tonnage and upwards, and all passenger ships. It transmits at 12.5 watts using SOTDMA, giving it priority access to slots. Dynamic reporting intervals vary with vessel behaviour, from about every 2 to 10 seconds when underway to every 3 minutes at anchor, with faster rates when turning.
