Definition
Designed for non-SOLAS vessels, Class B transmits at 2 watts and carries lower slot priority than Class A. The original Class B (CSTDMA) listens for a free slot before transmitting and reports position typically every 30 seconds under 2 knots. Class B SO (SOTDMA) transmits at 5 watts with reserved slots and faster update rates. Class B omits some data fields such as rate of turn, navigational status and voyage destination.
