Definition
A generic term embracing clearing bearings, clearing transits, clearing depth contours and clearing ranges from radar or a distance-off circle. The line is pre-drawn during passage planning and annotated with the safe side. A depth-based clearing line, for example staying outside the 10 metre contour, is often the most robust in poor visibility because the echo sounder works when no marks are visible. Several clearing lines can be combined to box in a safe corridor.
