Definition
Sheets are trimmed hard and the boat sails at the smallest apparent wind angle at which the sails still drive efficiently, typically about 30 to 35 degrees apparent for a modern cruiser, corresponding to roughly 40 to 50 degrees off the true wind. Progress directly upwind is made by beating, sailing alternate close hauled boards and tacking between them, so the distance sailed exceeds the distance made good.
