Definition
A saddle-shaped region of nearly uniform pressure lying between two anticyclones on one axis and two depressions on the other. Winds are light and variable, making progress under sail difficult and leaving a vessel vulnerable to whatever system arrives next. Cols favour fog and low stratus in cool conditions and heavy thunderstorms in warm, humid air, and they typically break down within a day or two.
