Compass error is the algebraic sum of variation and deviation for the heading in question, so 6 degrees West variation with 2 degrees East deviation gives 4 degrees West total error. Applying the standard conversion, true equals compass plus easterly error or minus westerly error. Determining compass error by an astronomical azimuth or a transit and comparing it with the expected value is the routine daily check on the steering compass at sea.
