Definition
Most ports impose pilotage on vessels above a stated length, draught or tonnage, and on those carrying dangerous cargo; pleasure craft are usually exempt below the threshold. A master or mate who serves the port regularly may hold a pilotage exemption certificate, gained by examination in local knowledge, permitting them to pilot a named vessel or class within defined limits. Holding an exemption does not lower the standard of local knowledge expected.
