Definition
A conformal projection preserves angles locally and keeps scale the same in every direction at any given point, so small shapes are rendered truly even though areas are distorted. This is the essential property for a navigational chart, because bearings measured on paper correspond to bearings measured at sea. Mercator, transverse Mercator and Lambert conformal conic are all conformal; equal-area projections are not, and are unsuitable for navigation.
