Definition
The set of alternatives written into the passage plan for foreseeable problems: a second route, a decision to heave to or stand off until daylight, arrival after a tidal gate has closed, loss of the main engine, failure of satellite position fixing, fog, or an injury requiring evacuation. Each entry states the trigger, the action and the latest time or position at which the decision must be made, so the watchkeeper is not improvising under pressure.
