Definition
An apparent force arising in the rotating frame of the Earth, deflecting moving air to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern. Its magnitude is proportional to wind speed and to the sine of latitude, so it vanishes at the equator and is greatest at the poles. It explains why winds circulate anticlockwise around northern hemisphere lows rather than blowing straight into them.
