Definition
XTE is the perpendicular distance from the vessel to the rhumb line joining the previous and active waypoints, displayed by the receiver in nautical miles or cables with a left or right indication. It is output in the NMEA XTE and RMB sentences and drives autopilot track steering and the plotter's steering bar. An XTE alarm limit set to a safe value gives early warning of set by tide or of a steering error.
