Definition
Forms in the lee of a headland, breakwater or island where flow separation creates a recirculating zone. A back eddy can be exploited to make ground against a foul main stream by hugging the shore inside the separation line, a standard inshore tactic at places such as Portland Bill. The shear line between eddy and main stream is often marked by a visible tide line and can affect steering sharply.
