Sailing downwind, the boat is borne away until the wind crosses the stern and the mainsail swings to the other side. Because the boom travels fast and under load, the controlled technique is to sheet the main hard in beforehand, turn steadily, then ease it out on the new gybe. An accidental or crash gybe is a common cause of rig damage and head injury, which a preventer guards against.
