Definition
A sailing vessel also being propelled by machinery counts as a power-driven vessel under the steering and sailing rules, and must exhibit forward, where it can best be seen, a conical shape with its apex pointing downwards. The international rules give no size exemption; the old under-12-metre proviso was deleted in 2003, and survives only in some national inland rules such as those of the United States. After dark the same vessel shows masthead light, sidelights and sternlight rather than sailing lights.
