Definition
Forms many narrow beams athwartships in a fan, typically producing a swath width of about three to five times water depth, giving full bottom coverage when lines are run with overlap. Data must be corrected for vessel motion using an inertial sensor, for sound velocity using measured profiles, and reduced to chart datum. Modern harbour and approach charts derived from multibeam surveys carry far higher confidence than lead line or single beam sources.
