Definition
Encoded with standard abbreviations such as S for sand, M for mud, Cy for clay, G for gravel, P for pebbles, St for stones, R for rock, Co for coral, Sh for shells and Wd for weed, sometimes qualified by f for fine, c for coarse, so for soft, h for hard and by colour. It determines holding for an anchor, mud and firm sand generally holding well while rock, weed and shingle hold poorly, and it also affects sonar and radar returns.
