Definition
Within roughly 40 to 45 degrees either side of the true wind direction for a typical cruising yacht, the sails cannot generate lift and simply flap, so the boat stops. The total blocked sector is therefore about 80 to 90 degrees wide, narrower for a performance keelboat and wider for a heavy long-keeled vessel. Ground to windward is gained only by tacking around the edges of this sector.
