Definition
A parallel index is drawn parallel to the intended ground track at the planned passing distance from a selected charted radar-conspicuous object. Keeping the object's echo sliding exactly along the line confirms the vessel is on track; the echo drifting inside or outside the line reveals set immediately and continuously, without plotting. It requires an accurate heading input and a correctly identified object, and works equally well in relative or true motion.
