Printed with a fixed set of parallels and a compass rose, the sheet is customised for the working latitude by scaling the longitude spacing, since one minute of longitude equals one minute of latitude times the cosine of the latitude. The navigator labels the parallels for the area in use, marks the assumed position, lays off the azimuth and intercept, and draws the position line. Latitude minutes serve directly as the distance scale in nautical miles.
