Definition
The fundamental building block of piloting, obtained from a compass bearing, a transit, a radar range, a depth contour, a sector light boundary or a celestial sight. A single line constrains position to that locus; two crossing lines give a fix and three give a cocked hat that reveals error. Lines are annotated with the time and, where advanced or retarded for a run, with both times separated by a dash.
