Definition
Slab or single-line reefing pulls the mainsail down to a reef cringle at luff and leech, while headsails are reduced by roller furling or by changing to a smaller sail. The seamanlike rule is to reef when the thought first occurs, before the boat becomes overpressed, since excessive heel produces weather helm, leeway and loss of speed. Reefing early also keeps the manoeuvre easy for a short-handed crew.
