Definition
In relative motion own ship stays at a fixed point and all echoes move by the vector sum of their motion and the reverse of yours, which shows collision risk directly since a target on a steady bearing tracks straight towards the centre. In true motion own ship travels across the display and land stays still, which is far easier for pilotage and parallel indexing but requires accurate speed and heading inputs to remain correct.
