Definition
Conventionally defined as an individual wave whose height exceeds about twice the significant wave height of the surrounding sea. They arise from constructive interference between wave trains, from focusing by currents such as the Agulhas, and from nonlinear effects within steep seas. Because they are usually preceded by a deep trough, they present a near vertical face; they are rare but well documented and are a design case for offshore vessels.
