Definition
S-band operates around 3 GHz with a wavelength near ten centimetres. It penetrates precipitation and heavy sea clutter far better and holds longer detection ranges in bad weather, at the cost of a wider beam for a given antenna size and weaker returns from very small targets. Larger ships are required to carry both bands so the navigator can compare pictures; the antenna is too big for most yachts.
