Definition
This occurs when the boat bears away past a dead run so the wind crosses the stern from the same quarter the mainsail is set on. Airflow over the mainsail reverses and the boom becomes liable to slam across in an unexpected gybe. Warning signs are the leech starting to lift and the burgee or wind indicator crossing the centreline, and the cure is to luff back onto the correct side promptly.
