Definition
A towfish emits fan-shaped beams to each side and records echo strength against time, building an image where hard, rough or raised features return strongly and shadows reveal height. It maps objects such as wrecks, boulders and cable routes far better than it measures depth, since it gives limited depth information directly. It is commonly run alongside multibeam so that contacts detected in the imagery can be assigned an accurate least depth.
