Many transponders offer a receive-only setting. SOLAS Chapter V Regulation 19 requires AIS to be in continuous operation except where an international agreement or standard provides for protection of navigational information, and the master may switch it off where its operation would compromise the ship's security, recording the reason in the log. Leisure crews sometimes use silent mode for privacy, but doing so removes a valuable indication of your presence to commercial watchkeepers.
