Definition
Instead of a high-power magnetron pulse, these sets transmit a low-power frequency-modulated continuous wave and derive range from the frequency difference between transmitted and returned signals. Advantages are excellent short-range performance with almost no minimum range, instant start-up with no warm-up, very low radiated power and long service life. Long-range performance against small targets in a seaway can be weaker than an equivalent magnetron set, although pulse-compression designs have narrowed the gap.
