Definition
Message 5 for Class A carries IMO number, call sign, ship name, ship and cargo type, overall dimensions expressed as distances from the GNSS antenna to bow, stern, port and starboard, static draught, destination and estimated time of arrival. It is transmitted every 6 minutes and on request. Class B uses messages 24A and 24B for name, type and dimensions. Destination and ETA are entered manually and are frequently stale or wrong.
