Definition
Historically achieved by towing a horizontal wire between two vessels at a set depth to snag any pinnacle, and now more usually by full coverage multibeam. Charts annotate such areas with a depth figure and a distinctive symbol indicating the area has been swept to that level. A swept depth is a positive statement of clearance rather than merely the shallowest sounding recorded, so it carries greater confidence for deep draught passage.
