Definition
The tacking angle is the sum of the close hauled angles on each side of the true wind, typically 80 to 90 degrees for a cruising yacht and as little as 70 degrees for a racing keelboat. It is measured over the ground rather than through the water when tidal set is present, so a cross tide can make one board far more productive than the other and must be allowed for when planning boards.
