Definition
Used in French tide tables and widely quoted on Channel and Biscay coasts, the coefficient expresses the day's range at Brest as a proportion of the mean spring range. Roughly 120 is the maximum equinoctial spring, 95 mean springs, 70 mean tide, 45 mean neaps and 20 the smallest neaps. It gives a quick feel for range and likely stream strength, but it is not a height, so predictions must still be worked properly.
