Definition
Calculated for each individual tide as high water height minus low water height, both above chart datum. It determines which tidal curve to interpolate and whether conditions are nearer springs or neaps for the day. Range is not the same as the height of tide, and comparing the day's range with the port's published mean spring and neap ranges is the standard way to judge the state of the cycle.
