Definition
A warm-core system forming over sea temperatures of about 26 degrees Celsius or more, usually between 5 and 20 degrees latitude. It is classed as a tropical storm at sustained winds of 34 to 63 knots and as a hurricane, typhoon or cyclone at 64 knots and above. Warning signs at sea include a long low swell from an unusual direction, a pressure fall exceeding about 3 hPa below the diurnal normal, and increasing cirrus.
