The Solitary Islands stretch is compact but complex: a narrow continental shelf close to shore, a chain of granite and volcanic islands sitting a few kilometres offshore, a sequence of open beaches and rocky headlands, and a scattering of river mouths and estuaries that break the coastline. From a sailor’s viewpoint this creates sharply contrasting water — calm, shallow bays and river mouths one day; wind‑driven seas and long east–southeast groundswells the next. The islands themselves act as both markers and modifiers of conditions: they reduce fetch immediately leeward of their lee in moderate conditions but become focal points for refracted swell and stronger local currents when the sea builds.
Typical sea states for passage planning range from short, choppy seas inside the headlands to longer period swell on the seaward approaches. Seasonal winds and swell: what changes through the year and why it matters
Seasonal rhythm in the Solitary Islands is pronounced. Broadly, the region sees a summer dominance of northeasterly to east sea breezes, with warm days and the East Australian Current close to shore bringing clearer, warmer water and frequent small‑craft sport and tourist activity. Late spring into summer is when the islands and inshore reefs are most accessible to snorkellers, dive operators and visiting yachts because swell is often lower and sea temperatures higher.
Autumn and spring are transitional windows that can produce both settled periods and abrupt frontal systems. These seasons bring more variability: long‑period swell from distant lows, and occasionally stronger southerly or southeast winds with short notice. Winter is when southerly and east‑southeast ocean swell is most likely to be persistent; frontal systems and coastal lows can generate longer, higher swell and stronger winds. Winter passages therefore demand more conservative planning, greater sea‑state tolerance and an acceptance that many sheltered anchorages will be compromised by swell wrapping into previously calm bays.

Practical passage planning: timing, channels, shelter choices and margin
Start planning by sequencing the day around tidal behaviour and predicted swell. Where passages require threading between islands or along reefs, aim to transit in a favourable tidal phase that reduces opposing tidal flow. Avoid planning tight transits during peak tidal acceleration. Keep passage legs short where possible so you can alter the plan if swell or wind builds; the local coast offers many intermediate shelter options — river mouths, leeward coves and harbour basins — that are useful contingency stops.
Watch the swell period as closely as wind speed. A moderate wind with a long‑period groundswelling sea can make channels and shallow reef edges uncomfortable and dangerous for anchoring. If forecasts show a rising long‑period swell, choose harbour berths or deep anchorages with room to ride off swell rather than small shallow coves that transmit bottom motion. In contrast, short, steep wind waves are more easily handled under canvas or with reduced sail area.

Keep lines and ground tackle rated above the minimum for the boat’s displacement and practise secure snubber and bridle arrangements for mixed swell.
Contingency planning and conservative margins
Always have a turnaround window built into each day’s plan: an expected latest‑safe‑move time after which you either seek the nearest secure harbour or anchor or remain in a protected berth for the night. Factor in fuel reserves sufficient for beating off an adverse tide if caught outside a harbour. When planning night passages between headlands or islands, increase margin: reduce sail early, post extra lookouts, and prefer deeper, charted shipping channels to unfamiliar shallows.

The Coffs Harbour International Marina is the principal berth and service hub for the region. The marina offers modern floating berths suitable for a wide range of pleasure craft and visiting yachts, visitor berths and facilities such as shore power, water, pump‑out and fuel access through on‑site operators. The marina precinct also concentrates chandlery options, marine trades, provisioning and tourism businesses, which makes it the practical base for repairs, provisioning and crew changes. Visitors should contact the marina in advance during major events or holiday periods; berths can be in demand and the marina operates house rules and booking arrangements.
Outside Coffs the coast is more sparsely serviced. Sawtell and Woolgoolga provide small boat ramps, club facilities and limited visitor berthing; these towns are useful for day‑boat launching and short visits but they do not offer the full service range of a major marina. Boat ramps and local clubs support trailer‑sailer activity at many beaches — Moonee, Sawtell and Woolgoolga are typical launch points — but those ramps have tidal and surf constraints and are busiest on weekends. Crude visitor moorings and public wharves exist in some towns: check local council and marina operators for up‑to‑date availability and booking procedures.
For most cruising yachts the practical docking pattern is to arrive into Coffs Harbour for mechanical work, fuel and victualling, then operate from the marina or anchor in designated areas for short coastal hops. The marina’s harbour location inside the breakwaters gives good protection from most combinational wave conditions, but transient harbour works or maintenance may impose temporary restrictions on access or visitor berths — notices to mariners and the marina operator are the authoritative source. Pump‑out, waste disposal and wastewater reception at the marina permit compliance with biosecurity and waste rules; however, vessels planning extended stays away from Coffs should prepare to return to the marina for major servicing and refuse disposal because more remote anchorages and estuaries usually have minimal shore services.
The Solitary Islands Marine Park and adjacent Commonwealth marine reserve areas impose the most consequential rules for visiting sailors. Anchoring rules are particularly relevant for cruisers who want to visit reefed islands. Some sanctuary areas close to islands and headlands mean you cannot anchor on reefs or within specified zones even if the bottom appears suitable. The management plan and recent zoning reviews note the need to reduce anchor damage on reefs and identify areas for moorings or for restricting anchoring; in a few places the authorities are evaluating moorings to replace informal anchorages.
That means crews must consult official zoning maps and, where available, contact local ranger or park staff before anchoring in island waters. Parks Australia and NSW government marine park pages provide the authoritative zoning maps for the Commonwealth and state waters respectively.
Apart from the marine‑park rules, port and harbour regulations apply in Coffs Harbour and at other declared port areas. Marina operators have specific house rules, berthing conditions and visitor protocols; the port area and breakwater structure is managed as a port precinct and some harbour areas may have restricted access or operational limitations, particularly where commercial fishing, cargo or maintenance operations are underway. Recreational vessels are required to comply with NSW marine safety laws and local port directions, including mooring licence rules for permanent moorings and time‑at‑anchor restrictions in some Crown waters.
The Solitary Islands coast presents a mix of coastal‑scale hazards familiar to NSW sailors and a few location‑specific challenges that demand local knowledge. One defining hazard is swell. The islands sit forward of a relatively broad open fetch to the east and north‑east, so a persistent ocean swell will strike reef edges and small islands, producing confused seas around the outer islands and wave shoaling close to headlands. That swell also translates into strong shore breaks and unreliable anchoring conditions in shallow sand behind some headlands; beaches that look calm from a distance can quickly build dangerous surf during an ocean swell.
Reefs and submerged shoals are concentrated around the islands and headlands. Features such as Forty Acres Reef (also known locally by other names) and Sidney Shoals produce shallow, reefed ground that lies close to navigable channels in places. These reef systems are biologically rich but require careful navigation — many of them are charted, but tidal state, wind and swell can disguise their edges. Isolated rocky outcrops and ledges around the Solitary Islands can break the surface at low water and produce strong local eddies and wave reflection in certain conditions.
Tidal currents and river bar conditions matter at the river entrances that sailors use for sheltered overnighting.
