About Cooper Bellingham
Cooper Bellingham is a Yacht Broker with Sydney Marine Brokerage, working from the company’s office at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club in Newport.
He brings a particularly strong competitive sailing background to the brokerage desk. Cooper has grown up around the Pittwater sailing community, raced across several dinghy and high-performance classes and represented the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club in youth sailing programs.
His experience gives him a natural understanding of why sailors care about handling, responsiveness, sail controls and what a boat feels like once it leaves the marina.
Growing up around Pittwater
Cooper is a long-time member of the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, one of Australia’s largest and most active sailing clubs.
Based on Pittwater, the club supports everything from junior dinghy sailing and youth development to keelboat racing, offshore competition and cruising. Growing up within this environment gave Cooper regular exposure to sailors, racing programs, yacht owners and the practical side of keeping boats ready for the water.
This is a useful foundation for a broker because it creates familiarity with boats as working sailing machines, not simply as products being advertised.
Junior sailing and the Optimist class
Cooper’s public racing record reaches back to his years sailing Optimist dinghies.
In 2016, sailing *Whooshka*, he won the Optimist Intermediate division at the NSW Youth Championships. He later progressed into the Open fleet and competed at state, national and international development events.
The Optimist may be a small boat, but it teaches the fundamentals properly. Sailors learn about wind shifts, sail trim, starting tactics, balance, boat speed and decision-making without a large crew or complicated systems to hide behind.
That experience gave Cooper a strong technical sailing base at an early stage of his time on the water.
Australian and international youth competition
Cooper competed in the 2018 Australian and Open Optimist Championships, racing in the Gold fleet against sailors from across Australia and overseas.
He was also involved with Australian Optimist development sailing, including international competition in Thailand. Racing in unfamiliar waters introduces young sailors to different wind patterns, conditions, race management and levels of competition.
These experiences helped build a wider sailing perspective beyond regular club racing on Pittwater.
Sabot, 29er and high-performance sailing
After his Optimist years, Cooper continued into other dinghy and performance classes.
His public results include a third-place finish in the Sabot single-handed division at the 2018 NSW Youth Championships. He later sailed the 29er, a fast two-person skiff that demands good teamwork, fitness and quick reactions.
The 29er is considerably more powerful and physically demanding than an Optimist or Sabot. Sailors need to coordinate trapezing, steering, sail trim, manoeuvres and tactical decisions while keeping the boat moving at speed.
Cooper has also sailed the WASZP, a single-handed foiling dinghy capable of lifting its hull clear of the water. Foiling adds another layer of technical difficulty, with small changes in balance, trim and control producing an immediate effect.
Experience across these classes gives Cooper a genuine appreciation for performance, efficiency and the relationship between a sailor and the boat.
SailGP Inspire selection
Cooper was selected alongside Sara Bruce to represent the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club in the SailGP Inspire Racing program during the Sydney SailGP event in 2020.
The program brought together youth sailors from leading Sydney clubs and gave them access to racing, technical areas and the professional environment surrounding SailGP.
Selection for the program reflected Cooper’s involvement in youth sailing and his development as a competitive sailor. It also provided early exposure to the highest-performance end of the sport and the professional organisation behind a major international sailing event.
Moving into yacht brokerage
Cooper has taken his sailing background into a professional role with Sydney Marine Brokerage.
As a broker, he works with both sailing and power vessels. His advertised portfolio has included production cruising yachts, performance sailing boats, flybridge cruisers, luxury motor yachts and commercially operated vessels.
This variety is important because each category attracts a different buyer. Someone searching for a Bavaria cruiser has different priorities from a client considering a commercial charter vessel or a large luxury motor yacht.
Cooper’s role involves understanding those requirements, presenting suitable boats and helping manage the steps between the first enquiry and final handover.
Sailing-yacht experience
Cooper’s brokerage work includes pre-owned sailing yachts from brands such as Bavaria and Beneteau, alongside Sydney Marine Brokerage’s new-yacht portfolio.
For sailing-yacht buyers, his racing background provides useful context when discussing:
- Sail plans and handling
- Cockpit and deck layouts
- Helm feel and visibility
- Short-handed sailing
- Standing and running rigging
- Performance versus cruising comfort
- Draft and keel configuration
- Electronics and sailing instruments
- Sail inventories
- Club racing potential
- Coastal cruising suitability
A buyer may not want a racing yacht, but sailing experience still matters when assessing whether a cruising boat will be manageable, balanced and enjoyable to sail.
Bavaria and Grand Soleil exposure
Sydney Marine Brokerage is the Australian dealer for Bavaria Yachts and represents Grand Soleil, giving Cooper exposure to two very different sides of the sailing-yacht market.
Bavaria builds production cruising yachts designed around accommodation, practical sailing and family use. Grand Soleil produces Italian performance cruisers and racing-oriented yachts for owners who place greater emphasis on speed and sailing response.
Working around both brands gives Cooper useful experience when discussing the compromise between comfort and performance.
Some buyers want a yacht that can be handled easily by a couple and used for relaxed coastal cruising. Others want sharper sailing characteristics, a more performance-focused sail plan or the ability to compete in club and offshore events.
Pre-owned brokerage
Cooper works with owners buying and selling pre-owned vessels through Sydney Marine Brokerage.
For buyers, this can include providing vessel information, arranging private inspections, discussing the equipment inventory and helping coordinate offers, surveys, sea trials and settlement.
For sellers, the role includes understanding the boat, preparing its listing, communicating with prospective buyers and managing viewings and negotiations.
His sailing background is particularly useful when describing a yacht’s handling, racing history, sails and deck equipment. It helps him communicate details that may be important to experienced sailors but easy to overlook in a basic listing.
Powerboats and commercial vessels
Although Cooper has a strong sailing background, his brokerage portfolio is not limited to sailing yachts.
Public listings handled by him have included flybridge motor cruisers, luxury powerboats, charter vessels and commercially operated boats.
Commercial vessels can involve additional considerations such as AMSA survey status, passenger capacity, business operations, future bookings, safety equipment and commercial maintenance requirements.
Exposure to this part of the market broadens Cooper’s experience beyond conventional recreational yacht sales.
Working with buyers
Cooper can help buyers define what they need from a boat before they become distracted by polished photographs and long equipment lists.
Important questions may include:
- How many people will normally be aboard?
- Will the boat be raced, cruised or used for both?
- Can it be handled by a couple or small crew?
- Is it suitable for Pittwater, harbour sailing or coastal passages?
- How much maintenance will be required?
- Which equipment has been upgraded?
- How old are the sails and standing rigging?
- Does the layout work for weekends or longer periods aboard?
- Will the draft suit the intended cruising grounds?
- Is the boat privately operated or in commercial survey?
An independent survey remains essential for a pre-owned purchase, but a broker with genuine sailing experience can help a buyer reach the inspection stage with a clearer idea of what matters.
Working with sellers
For sellers, Cooper can help present the yacht in a way that speaks to actual boat users.
A sailing-yacht listing should explain more than the number of cabins and engine horsepower. Buyers want to know how the boat handles, whether it can be sailed short-handed, what condition the sails and rigging are in and how it has been used.
Cooper’s racing and club background helps him recognise these details and communicate them naturally to potential buyers.
He can also manage enquiries, arrange viewings and help the transaction progress through negotiation, survey, sea trial and settlement.
What Cooper brings to a yacht transaction
Cooper represents a younger generation of yacht brokers who have come into the industry with a genuine sailing record already behind them.
His background includes Optimist racing, Sabot competition, 29er skiff sailing, WASZP foiling and selection for the SailGP Inspire program. Combined with his long connection to the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, this gives him a strong understanding of Sydney’s sailing community.
For buyers and sellers, the useful part of his profile is the overlap between competitive sailing, local knowledge and hands-on brokerage experience across sailing yachts, powerboats and commercial vessels.
