Marina service
About
Cooktown Marina is a welcoming Endeavour River fuel and berthing stop, providing a valuable northern base for recreational and commercial vessels.
Service area: Cooktown, QLD
Keep exploring
Cooktown Marina is a genuine Far North Queensland boating outpost on the Endeavour River. Its fuel facilities and limited pontoon berthing make it an important stop for recreational yachts, fishing boats and commercial vessels travelling along one of Australia’s most remote and rewarding coastlines.
The marina’s appeal lies in its simplicity and location. Crews can refuel, enjoy a meal by the water, provision in town and prepare for passages toward Lizard Island, Cape York or the reef, all while experiencing Cooktown’s distinctive blend of maritime history, Indigenous culture and tropical hospitality.
The marina’s fuel berth supports diesel refuelling and larger commercial requirements, complemented by casual and permanent berthing arrangements for suitable vessels. The waterfront kiosk serves meals, snacks and takeaway, creating a lively meeting point for locals, visiting crews and travellers exploring the esplanade.
Cooktown’s shops, bakery, butcher, hardware stores and pubs are close enough for practical provisioning, while local trades can assist with routine mechanical and electrical needs. For larger refit work, Cairns remains the regional service centre, making Cooktown Marina the ideal place to fuel, restock and organise the boat before continuing into more remote waters.
The Endeavour River offers a sheltered harbour with a marked approach, and arrivals are most comfortable with favourable tide and good visibility. The town rises behind the waterfront, placing museums, historic sites, groceries and dining within easy reach of the marina.
Lizard Island lies to the north-east and is one of the coast’s great cruising destinations, while Cape Bedford and the surrounding reefs offer excellent fishing and dramatic tropical scenery. Cooktown’s airport and sealed road connection make crew changes practical, and the annual Discovery Festival brings the waterfront to life each June. For northbound voyagers, the marina is a memorable final urban stop before the magnificent distances of Cape York.

American River (Kangaroo Island, SA) is a small, sheltered inlet and township on the north‑eastern side of Kangaroo Island that acts as a calm staging point for cruising the eastern part of the island and for short hops through Backstairs Passage. It’s distinctive for its protected anchorage inside Eastern Cove and the adjacency of Pelican Lagoon — a shallow, ecologically important lagoon with sanctuary zoning — which shapes how and where boats can move. The area suits sheltered day sailing, weekend cruising and short coastal passages; it’s appropriate for trailer sailors, small cruisers and a
Plan passages across Spencer Gulf or to Kangaroo Island by basing fuel on your boat’s actual consumption plus a generous reserve, choosing sensible staging/stop options that match your boat and crew, and prioritising shelter and weather windows (gale fronts, strong winds and tidal streams can make the gulf uncomfortable or unsafe). Confirm fuel availability, safe anchorages or marinas on your route, and check up-to-date local weather, tide and navigation information before you go.
Explore →Plan as a chain of conservative daily legs tied to your boat’s real-world fuel and speed in the expected sea state, with confirmed primary and alternate anchorages/berths, fuel legs and back-up fuel options, and a documented emergency/diversion plan (comms, tow and med-evac). Build tidal and weather gates into each leg and carry chart and comms redundancy.
Explore →Expect light to moderate, thermally-driven sea breezes in summer with afternoon strengthening; more changeable and often stronger winds with frontal systems in autumn and spring; and the windiest, roughest conditions in winter when cold fronts and sou’westers are most frequent. Gulf St Vincent is more sheltered than the exposed coast but can still produce steep chop and sudden changes near Adelaide and headlands.
