Ningaloo Discovery is based in Exmouth and runs tours on Ningaloo Reef and the Exmouth Gulf. Its main vessel is Windcheetah, a 60-foot sailing catamaran used for whale shark swims, humpback whale tours, two-hour sunset sails and an overnight live-aboard that pairs a whale shark day with a night on board. The fleet also includes a powerboat for some tours.
Matt Oakley and Sarah Ellis run the business, which is Advanced Eco Tourism certified and has won several WA Tourism Awards. Guests can relax on the trampolines and daybeds or help hoist and trim the sails, and exclusive charters can be tailored for anything from a couple to a group of 100.
It suits travellers who want reef and wildlife encounters with time under sail. Whale shark season runs from about March to November. When booking a whale shark swim, check whether it runs on the sailing catamaran or the powerboat.

Reef as soon as the boat becomes hard to steer, uncomfortable, or when sails start flogging — reduce the mainsail first (to keep balance), then reduce headsail area; practise the reefing sequence and check sail trim and helm balance afterwards.
