If you dream of crossing oceans, Pantaenius is probably already on your shortlist. It's one of the world's best-known specialist yacht insurers, with around 110,000 customers and offices across Europe and Australia. The Australian arm runs from Warriewood, a short drive from Pittwater.
Pantaenius began in 1899, when Johann C. Pantaenius founded a marine insurance brokerage in Hamburg. The yacht business as we know it came later: Harald Baum joined in 1963, took over in 1970, and developed a new kind of hull insurance for yachts that changed how they were insured. The yacht business became its own company in the late 1990s, and it's still family-run. Harald's children Daniel, Martin and Anna now lead it. In 2024 Pantaenius celebrated 125 years.

Having both options is rare. BestBoatInsurance notes that Pantaenius is the only specialist in its comparison offering agreed-value and market-value policies side by side.
Pantaenius is the specialist to beat for offshore and international cruising. Club Marine is broader (it covers every type of boat) and has a bigger emergency benefit. New Wave and Topsail are worth quoting if you race, or if you want a broker to shop the market.
