Definition
Used when a pure great circle would carry the vessel into ice, gales or prohibited high latitudes. The track comprises a great circle arc from the departure position tangential to a chosen limiting parallel, a run along that parallel, then a second great circle arc tangential to it down to the destination. It is slightly longer than the direct great circle but keeps the vessel equatorward of the stated limit throughout.
