Definition
Signals from satellites low on the horizon travel obliquely through the ionosphere and troposphere, suffer greater delay uncertainty, and are far more prone to reflection off the sea surface. Receivers therefore ignore satellites below a set elevation, commonly between five and ten degrees. Raising the mask improves individual measurement quality but reduces the number of satellites available and can worsen geometry, so most marine sets leave the default alone.
