Definition
The expanding square, one of the standard IAMSAR patterns, starts at the datum position and runs successive legs at right angles, each pair of legs longer than the last by one track spacing. It gives dense, uniform coverage close to the datum and suits a small search area where the position is reasonably well known, such as a person overboard. Alternative patterns include the sector search and the parallel track search for larger areas.
