Definition
Adopted under SOLAS, GMDSS replaced manual radio watchkeeping with automated alerting, defining carriage requirements by sea area rather than ship size. Its functions include ship-to-shore, shore-to-ship and ship-to-ship distress alerting, search and rescue coordination communications, locating signals, maritime safety information broadcasts and general communications. Equipment typically comprises DSC radios, satellite EPIRB, radar or AIS SART, NAVTEX and satellite terminals with prescribed battery reserves.
